🎯Design

...ed by a developer.

Blanks are simple little creatures. Intentionally so. Their simplicity is driven by two factors - keeping the metadata small, and keeping them as G-rated as possible.

All Blanks feature the same basic head shape, with minor additions for the caterpillar, snail and rabbit.

This head shape is also the Blanks "b" logo.

Keeping Blanks as simple silhouettes allows for designs with a variety of artistic styles, ranging from somewhat realistic to completely abstract.

Colors

The primary color palette is made up of 13 vibrant hues, carefully chosen to ensure clean and cohesive combinations. Occasionally grey is incorporated. Silhouette and border colors remain consistent, with options of white and black.

Backgrounds

The backgrounds are generated using a series of custom algorithms with the goal of making each Blank as polished as possible. At each stage of the process, deterministic randomization adds an element of surprise.

The first step is to choose a pattern from a pool of more than a dozen patterns.

Each pattern determines the number of colors to use and selects the optimal color scale. The colors are chosen from the primary palette and may be manipulated to achieve lighter or darker shades or to blend intermediate colors. Importantly, only one type of color manipulation is applied at a time, maintaining consistency throughout.

Finally there are several transformations that can be applied to the pattern, including rotation, row shifting, and row reversal.

Finishing Touches

After the background has been generated the next step is to determine if the pattern is too light for a white animal, in which case both the animal and the border will use black. And finally on rare occasions the animal is flipped to face left.

The Little Things

Usually your Blank is displayed within a square frame. However, when you opt for full-screen mode, the Blank expands to occupy as much of the screen as possible and any remaining area is filled with the eye color of the animal, creating a cohesive design.
